BECKLEY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Greater Beckley Christian School announced on Wednesday that Justin Arvon will serve as full-time Administrator for the school beginning this summer.
Arvon is known for his work as boys’ basketball coach for GBCS, and will officially step into his new administrative role beginning July 1, 2023.
“We have made progress in the past year both spiritually and financially that has enabled us to find the right leader to take Greater Beckley Christian School into the future. We sought a leader who values Christian Education and the 50-year legacy that Greater Beckley Christian School has offered students, parents, and staff alike,” read a statement from the GBCS Board of Directors.
“It is our pleasure to announce that the Greater Beckley Christian School Board of Directors has voted to place Justin Arvon as full-time administrator moving forward. His official duties will begin on July 1, 2023. We ask for your prayers as we continue to plan for the 2023-2024 school term.”
LOOTPRESS reached out to Arvon to discuss his plans as administrator, the continued mission of the school as it celebrates its 50th anniversary, and the approaching deadline for application for the Hope Scholarship.
Regarding his own approach to the new role, Arvon explains that he hopes to continue the work of the school itself rather than implement any distinct changes.
“This is a ministry for the community, for Christian families, and for all families, really. We’re looking at things from an eternal perspective and not necessarily from a perspective of the world today. So, our success is measured long-term, and that’s what our curriculum is focused on: the biblical worldview; Christian education; sharing Jesus with the world. So that’s what our school’s mission is, to come alongside families to help them with educating their children the way they see fit, and that’s through a Christian education, through a biblical perspective.
We have a good financial backing, we have good plans in place for growth and progress in terms of facilities and curriculum. We’re going to maintain our accreditation. We’re accredited through ACSI, the Association of Christian Schools International. All of our staff is accredited, along with our school and our curriculum. So we do have standards we need to beat academically, spiritually, structurally, foundationally and otherwise, and we maintain those. Our curriculum is a college readiness curriculum, and we’re going to maintain that. We have three types of diploma programs for our high school students. They can use those tracks as early as their sophomore year.”
Arvon credits the students and staff with allowing the school to reach its milestone 50th year in operation since its 1973 establishment.
“We’ve been able to do this for what is now our 50th year. We have outstanding teachers. Our social studies teacher Steve Cuthbert, who is currently the Secondary Principal, has been at Greater Beckley for 30 years now. Our teachers are servant leaders. This is a service ministry to them. They love our kids, and they’re here to serve families.”
The Crusaders’ new Administrator also spoke on raising awareness of the approaching deadline for Hope Scholarship applications, for which Monday, May 15, 2023, will be the final day to apply.
“We’ve sent out direct mailers and have done a lot of social media and radio advertising. We’re trying to target people who may not yet know about it. A lot of students and families who are in the public school system right now are not aware of the Hope Scholarship, so we’re trying to spread the information as best as possible. I would encourage people to get on Hope Scholarship (hopescholarshipwv.com) and click “Apply for the Hope Scholarship.” You’ve got to do that by May 15th to be accepted for the 2023-2024 school year.”
