Grilled Potatoes – Easy Summer Side Dish!

I highly anticipate the onset of summer after enduring months of Midwestern cold, bitter weather and dreary skies. Not only is the weather a welcome relief, but grilling recipes, such as grilled red potatoes, grilled zucchini, and grilled parmesan chicken.

I love the ease of foil packet recipes like these easy grilled potatoes. Simply cut red potatoes, drizzle them with olive oil, Lawry’s® Seasoned Salt, McCormick® Black Pepper, and McCormick® Italian Seasoning, then roast them on the grill.

It couldn’t be easier! They make an easy side dish to serve BBQ pulled chicken, hot dogs, or any grilled meats!

Best Way to Grill Potatoes

No matter what kind of potato you’re grilling, red, new potatoes, russet, or Yukon gold, wrapping in foil first is the way to go. Foil packets make crispy, smoky potatoes, but with a lot less work at the grill. Plus, if you are looking for what to serve with burgers, they cook right along side grilled meats!

Russet potatoes are best wrapped whole and cooked on the grill. To save time, puncture potatoes with a fork and start the cooking process in the microwave oven for eight minutes. Wrap potatoes in foil and finish cooking on the grill for 30 minutes.

For crispy grilled potatoes, red or gold potatoes are ideal because they have less starch than russets. They hold their shape without breaking down, or turning mushy.

seasoning Grilled Potatoes

a foil packet of grilled potatoes sitting on a baking sheet with the seasonings used to make it beside them

Summer is a time to downshift. Looser schedules and warmer weather means our nightly dinners are held outside with food coming hot off the grill. I take full advantage of keeping the mess and heat out of the kitchen!

Quick and easy grilled meals doesn’t mean they lack flavor compared to complicated recipes. I don’t feel like a lot of fussy ingredients and laborious steps are needed if every component packs a flavor punch in perfect unison.

For potatoes on the grill I use four kitchen pantry staples – olive oil, Lawry’s® Seasoned Salt, McCormick® Black Pepper, and McCormick® Italian Seasoning.

The are many options to flavor potatoes, though. Along with the suggested seasonings, consider adding or swapping out one of the variations below.

  • garlic powder or minced garlic
  • sliced onions
  • sprinkle on parmesan cheese before serving
  • fresh rosemary or dried
  • any fresh herbs, such as thyme, parsley, or oregano
  • squeeze on lemon juice before serving
  • serve with a dollop of sour cream

do potatoes need to be boiled before grilling?

No, potatoes do not beed to be boiled before grilling as long as they are wrapped in a foil packet first. The foil traps the heat inside, allow the potatoes to soften then become crispy as they cook.

Tips for Grilling Potatoes

  • Smaller, bite-sized cuts will take less time to grill and become tender. Potato slices or wedges will also work, but will shorten or extend the cooking time.
  • Spraying foil with cooking spray makes the cooked potatoes release cleanly and easily.
  • Heavy duty foil will hold up better when moving packets around grill.
  • Use a fork or knife to puncture through packet and check if potatoes are tender.
  • If you aren’t planning on serving right away leave the potatoes closed in the packet. Move up to the grill’s warming rack or keep in a low oven. The potatoes will also stay warm up to 30 minutes just sitting in the pouch.

Making in the Oven

Don’t have a grill? Make foil potato packets in the oven! Simply place pouches on a rimmed baking sheet and bake in 400ºF oven for 20-30 minutes, flipping once.
