Goalkeeping has been a point of concern for Real Madrid ever since the season started. Los Blancos were interested in Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma throughout the summer but refused to upgrade that position, sticking with Keylor Navas and Kiko Casilla for another season. Navas has been injury prone while Casilla has proved that he’s not reliable enough to be the starter. It’s clear that Real Madrid need more from their goalkeepers, at least until the offense can carry the burden and show some firepower upfront. Here are three reasons why Los Blancos need to sign a goalkeeper this winter.
- Navas and Casilla will not improve. Keylor turns 31 years old this winter and Casilla is also 31. Not only do Real Madrid need to improve this position now, they also need to have a plan for the future as Navas and Casilla could’ve already started their decline.
- Kepa seems to be available for €25 million. It won’t be easy for the young goalkeeper to just wait until his deal with Athletic expires next summer and sign for Real Madrid as a free agent. Furthermore, Juventus are also interested in his talents, meaning that Los Blancos need to secure his signing for €25 million this very same winter. It’s not clear whether or not he will be Real’s starting goalkeeper for many years to come, but he is more reliable than Navas and Casilla right now.
- It just can’t get any worse than it is right now. Signing a goalkeeper this winter, whether it’s Kepa or somebody else, would be a low-risk move. Real Madrid still have money on their budget after selling Morata last summer and it’s clear that they will need to sign one keeper sooner or later. They might as well do it now to at least try to salvage the season.
