Prince William has undoubtedly given Kate Middleton countless memorable gifts during their more than two decades together. However, one particular gift from the early days of their relationship remains infamous. Back when they were both students at the University of St. Andrews, where they met in 2001 and fell in love, William's gift-giving skills were still a work in progress. In an interview on BBC Radio Five Live, he revealed an amusing misstep that has since become a running joke between the couple.

"I did get my wife a pair of binoculars once - she's never let me forget that," William admitted with a laugh. Reflecting on the gesture, he added, "That was early on in the courtship, that was - I think that sealed the deal. It didn't go well. Honestly, I have no idea why I bought her a pair of binoculars. It seemed like a good idea at the time."

It's clear that even future kings can stumble when trying to impress their significant other. The lighthearted anecdote speaks to the couple's enduring ability to laugh at themselves and each other, even years later.

There's humor in the Royal Family gifts

The royal family, known for their tradition of exchanging gag gifts during Christmas, has seen its share of humorous presents over the years. For example, Prince Harry once gifted Queen Elizabeth a shower cap emblazoned with the phrase "Ain't life a bitch." In another playful exchange, Kate gave Harry a "Grow Your Own Girlfriend Kit" before he met Meghan Markle, poking fun at his high-profile dating life at the time.

When Meghan Markle joined the royal family for her first Christmas at Sandringham in 2017, she also embraced the family's quirky gifting tradition. According to royal authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand in their book Finding Freedom, Meghan gave Prince William a gag gift that "was a huge hit," further endearing herself to her new in-laws.

These stories highlight the royals' sense of humor and their ability to maintain a down-to-earth dynamic despite their public roles. Whether it's a pair of binoculars that missed the mark or a cheeky Christmas gift, these moments offer a glimpse into the lighter side of royal life and the bonds they share as a family.
