WEST SPRINGFIELD — Local naturalists, photographers and historians will lead guided tours of West Springfield's Bear Hole watershed area from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15.

This free event is a chance for families with children to enjoy a leisurely fall hike while learning about the history and natural features of the Bear Hole Reservoir watershed area and its environs, a scenic area near the town's rural western border.

The easy walks are ideal for kids and families, according to organizers, whose goal is to teach people about the area. It's also a good chance to snap some fall foliage photos and pick up some nature photography tips from Mary Anne O'Connor, who will lead a session on "photographing special Bear Hole places" at 10 a.m.

Also at 10, Stan Svec will talk about the history of Bear Hole Resort. Svec will deliver the same talk again at 12:30 p.m.

At 10:15 a.m., Dietrich H. Schlobohm, a retired Springfield College professor, will discuss beaver activity along Paucatuck Brook.

At noon, naturalist Doug Guyette, will share information about the trees, plants and animals found at Bear Hole.

Also at noon, environmental educator Nancy Condon will lead a "stroll for kids and families," according to organizers.

All excursions are at the introductory level over easy terrain and begin at the Bear Hole Road parking area, which is located at the very end of the road. Bear Hole Road is off Dewey Street.

Preregistration is not required, but organizers recommend dressing for the outdoors and wearing appropriate footwear. Additional information is available at 413-788-4125.
