SPRINGFIELD — Springfield firefighters worked to put out a fire in a vacant house in the Memorial Square neighborhood in the city's North End early Wednesday evening.

Heavy smoke billowed from the boarded-up house at 17 Sheridan Lane. At about 6:30 p.m., the fire appeared to be out, and the fire department was venting the building.
