Boston Public Schools is facing legal action from a civil rights organization seeking information on the district's relationship with federal immigration officials.
In a lawsuit filed Thursday, the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights and Economic Justice and a coalition of students' rights groups allege Boston Public Schools is improperly sharing student information with federal immigration officials, including U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The suit seeks to obtain public records about what information has been shared.
The action was filed after information from an incident at East Boston High School was used as evidence in deportation proceedings against a student.
The lawsuit alleges information on students is shared with federal immigration officials through Boston Regional Intelligence Center, a multi-agency partnership focused on reducing crime and preventing acts of terrorism in and around Boston.
"The public, and certainly parents of schoolchildren, have a right to know what student information is being shared with ICE and other law enforcement officials," said Kathy Boundy, co-director of the Center for Law and Education.
