The Boston Red Sox have released reliever Carlos Marmol, who had an opt-out clause in his minor league contract.

Marmol allowed three runs, all earned, on four hits and seven walks while striking out five.

The Sox optioned Deven Marrero to Triple-A Pawtucket. They also reassigned Josh Rutledge, Allen Craig, Brennan Boesch, Dan Butler Sandy Leon and Anthony Varvaro to minor league camp.

Varvaro has two opt-out clauses in his contract. It appears Varvaro has chosen to forgo his first first opt-out clause and continue to work his way back at Pawtucket from the surgery on his right flexor tendon that caused him to miss the final five months of last season. He has allowed five runs, all earned, in 6 spring training innings.

Right-handed pitchers Carson Smith and Brandon Workman, left-handed pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez, and catcher Christian Vazquez all will start the year on the DL.

Craig, Leon, Rutledge, and Varvaro will remain with Boston through the two exhibition games in Montreal (April 1-2).
