Mourning picture
Not on view
Creating memorial paintings in watercolor on silk was another skill that a teenage girl at a ladies' academy might have acquired. These paintings were probably as difficult to complete as the needlework pictures; in both cases the girl probably followed an outline drawn by her teacher or a local artist. This is the only mourning picture in our collection that has not been filled in with birth and death dates.
