SALINE -- Saline defensive back Tyrone Miller felt the pressure leading up to national signing day.
Two weeks ago, Miller’s world was turned upside down when Central Michigan coach Dan Enos resigned to take the offensive coordinator position at Arkansas.
Enos recruited Miller for three-plus years, and the question marks surrounding CMU's coaching position forced the senior to evaluate his options.
But Enos leaving Mount Pleasant wasn’t the only unexpected turn of events. Miller added offers from Wyoming, and Kansas within 48 hours.
A scholarship offer from the Jayhawks, a member of the Big 12 conference immediately piqued Miller’s interest.
"I always want to challenge myself, and if I had gone to CMU I would have always wondered could have I played at an even higher level?” Miller said. “I won’t have to wonder about it anymore."
Miller went on an official visit to Kansas over the weekend, and flipped his verbal commitment from CMU to Kansas on Super Bowl Sunday.
The new Jayhawks coaching staff led by first-year coach David Beaty made Miller fell like their top priority the past two weeks. Miller compared Beaty’s “business-like” attitude to Saline coach Joe Palka.
Defensive backs coach Kenny Perry and running backs coach Reggie Mitchell were also part of Kansas’ late push.
“They didn’t even have a defensive backs coach until three weeks ago,” Miller said. “After that is basically when they saw my tape, and offered me. I think they even stayed down here a couple days to talk with me, and my mom.”
On his official visit, Kansas running back Corey Avery helped make Kansas a frontrunner. Avery, a Texas native, started four games this past season as a freshman.
“He was a highly recruited running back,” Miller said. “He had the opportunity to go to Ohio State, Texas Tech and Texas A&M, but picked Kansas. He wanted to be able to play, and still face the country’s top competition.”
Miller hopes he can follow in Avery’s footsteps to see the field early in his collegiate career.
“There will be a lot of competition on the roster this year,” Miller said. “I’m really excited.”
