New police sergeant to take over Allendale station

Sgt. JEFFREY STEIGENGA

Sgt. DEAN DEVRIES

After five years under the direction of Sgt. Dean DeVries, the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department substation in Allendale will be coming under new leadership.

Sheriff Gary Rozema on July 8 introduced the new sergeant, Jeffrey Steigenga, to the Township Board, and thanked DeVries for his service.

DeVries will take on new duties at the Sheriff's department headquarters in the Fillmore Street Complex, Olive Township. He will continue to perform some road patrol duties, and will have more responsibility for administrative work, such as scheduling.

Steigenga is a graduate of Unity Christian High School. He received an associate degree in criminal justice from Grand Rapids Community College in 1999, and is trained as an emergency medical technician. He began his service with the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department in 1998 as a reserve deputy, and has since gained experience as a road patrol deputy and community policing deputy. He currently is a detective investigating major cases, which includes supervising and assisting other deputies during investigations.

Rozema said Steigenga will take over the Allendale office Aug. 1. Two deputies work out of the station, Jake Mucha and Brandon Tubergen.
