MOUNT PLEASANT, MI — Five Guys Burgers and Fries is coming to Mount Pleasant, the home of Central Michigan University.
The burger chain, with locations throughout Michigan and the world, announced the news in a video on Facebook.
Five Guys officials aim to open the new Mount Pleasant location in October, according to the video announcement. A company representative said the restaurant is opening on Mission Street.
Five Guys was founded in 1986 in Arlington, Virginia. Over the past 33 years, the business has grown to include more than 1,500 locations spanning the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Europe and the Middle East, according to the company’s website.
Last year, Five Guys expanded into Oman, Belgium, Bahrain, Italy, Luxembourg, Hong Kong and Switzerland. Nearby Five Guys restaurants are located in Flint Township, Grand Blanc, East Lansing and Auburn Hills.
In 2017, Five Guys reported $1.7 billion in sales.
LeBron James-backed Blaze Pizza is another popular restaurant chain making news in Mount Pleasant. Blaze officials recently announced the chain is testing its first drive-thru location in the mid-Michigan college town.
Mount Pleasant’s Blaze Pizza opened at 1218 S. Mission St. in December and recently added a drive-thru or “blaze-thru” pick-up window, said Darla Bowen, marketing director for Blaze Midwest, which owns the Mount Pleasant location and 19 others. But there’s a catch: you have to use its app to order.
The announcements by the two restaurants come in the wake of Kroger closing its store in the city.
“We regretfully announced today our closure of our Mt. Pleasant store located at 4080 E. Blue Grass Road,” Hurst wrote in an email to MLive/The Saginaw News in March. “These decisions are never easy and are evaluated over time based upon financial instability.”
