SAGINAW TOWNSHIP, MI — The Women's Progressive Club will host its 56th Honors Scholarship Luncheon at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Trillium Banquet Center, 6415 State in Saginaw Township.
The club honors those in the education field and awards a $500 scholarship to a recent high school graduate each year at the luncheon.
Lorenzo Pierson will receive the Frederick Douglass Award for his work within the school system, said member Meshal Baldwin-Ahmad.
Art Neil and Charles McNair are receiving the Hazel Wright Community Service Award for their work with the Saginaw African Cultural Festival.
"They have the African Cultural Festival every year where people can learn about the culture of African Americans," Baldwin-Ahmad said.
Demona Reed will be recognized for having more than 20 years in the education field, Baldwin-Ahmad said.
Reed will receive the Mary McLeod Bethune Award.
A scholarship will be awarded to Cierra Bardell for an essay she wrote about helping others.
"Her essay was one of the best ones on the subject," Baldwin-Ahmad said.
Bardell is a 2014 graduate of Carrollton High School who is attending Oakland University.
Members of the club will also receive the Mary Church Terrell Club Women of The Year Award.
Cost for the event is $30.
