These two teams met in the national semifinal last year, when Caitlin Clark and the Hawkeyes took down the undefeated Gamecocks to advance to the championship game.
It is a similar story heading into Sunday. South Carolina might have been contested throughout the season, but they entered the Final Four with an unbeaten record after another SEC Championship, and whisked their way through its portion of the Albany Regional, then using a big second-half run to blow away North Carolina State in the semifinals on Friday.
This is the Gamecocks’ third trip to the championship game and the first since they defeated UConn to win it all two years ago. Under Dawn Staley, South Carolina has not lost in a title game.
The same cannot be said for Lisa Bulder’s Hawkeyes. After defeating the Gamecocks in 2023, Iowa was upended by a strong LSU team in the championship game in Iowa’s first national title game appearance. Clark and company got revenge on the Tigers this season, beating the reigning champions in the Elite Eight to advance to the Final Four for the third time in program history. Against UConn on Friday, Clark did not have the greatest of games, but got hot in the second half. Along with a great performance from Hannah Stuelke, Iowa pulled out a 71-69 victory to get back to the final game.
