One of the things I really wanted to do last time I was in Petra was to visit the ancient city at night when it is lit by hundreds of candles. I knew this only happens only a couple of times a week and unfortunately last time it wasn’t meant to be. Now, as luck would have it, the one night I was in Petra, it was the night of the “Petra by night” experience.
Although it does feel a bit overly touristic and at times people are a little bit too loud, it still is a very cool experience which I would definitely recommend. There’s a certain magic to walk through the Siq (the narrow wadi that leads to the main attraction – the Treasury) when it’s only lit by candles. In terms of photography it’s fairly difficult to get any kind of shots without people in them so it’s best to stick to very long exposures and try to blur out the people as much as possible. The added benefit of this are the star trails that form above the mountain.
