Nursing
Earn your Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from the University that was the first to offer it in the state of California — Mount Saint Mary’s University. The Mount has graduated numerous generations of nursing professionals into the world, guided by the world-renowned Roy Adaptation Model, which was developed at MSMU.
At Mount Saint Mary’s, we view nursing as a service to humanity. It is a profession committed to the promotion and restoration of health; the prevention of illness of individuals, families, groups and communities; and support for a dignified death. It is a science whose main concern involves the life processes that positively affect the health status and integrity of individuals, families and groups.
Our BSN degree program combines traditional classroom curricula with clinical rotation experience. You’ll be on the job — in real-world nursing environments — as soon as your second year in the program. Best of all, the Mount’s small class sizes mean your rotation will be limited to just 12 students, two days a week.
Because of our location, our students have the opportunity to work in some of the world’s leading hospital environments around Los Angeles.
Transfer students can apply directly to the BSN program, and first-year students can apply to MSMU as Pre-Nursing students to be considered for admission to the BSN program.
Clinical rotations
Clinical rotations begin in year two, with an emphasis on adult medical and surgical nursing. Third-year students focus on pediatric, mental health, maternal-newborn and advanced medical-surgical nursing. In the final year, classes and rotations focus on community health, leadership, gerontology and the professional practice.
Clinical rotations occur twice a week for six to 12 hours per day. Students provide their own transportation to clinical facilities.
NCLEX-RN
Upon completing the Bachelor of Science in Nursing, students are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) and are qualified to apply for the Public Health nursing certificate issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
The Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing meets the standards for and has been approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, leading to a California Registered Nurse (RN) license. Students who wish to practice in a state other than California may or may not have additional requirements to complete prior to applying for the RN license. Contact the Department of Nursing at [email protected] to discuss additional requirements that may be needed to obtain an RN license in a state outside of California.
