Two-Handed Bowling: Ball Speed Adjustments
Scott PohlDescription
In this premium video, Scott Pohl, owner of On Track Pro Shop, shows two-handed bowlers how to get faster and slower ball speed while keeping their mechanics fundamentally sound.
Faster Ball Speed
A faster foot tempo is how to achieve faster ball speed down the lane. If you try to create faster ball speed with your arms only, you will create an inconsistent swing leading to errant shots.
Start by moving back on the approach from your normal starting position. This will automatically force you to make your steps longer as you head towards the foul line.
Tighten up the angels with your feet and shoulders in the stance to avoid too much hook. Your shoulders and feet should be straighter toward your target.
Slower Ball Speed
A slower foot tempo is how to achieve slower ball speed down the lane. Same as before with faster ball speed, if you try to control the bowling ball with your arm swing to slow down your speed, you will create an inconsistent swing leading to errant shots.
To start, move up on the approach from your normal starting position. This will automatically make your footsteps shorter on your way up to the foul line.
Open up (turn towards your target) the angels in your stance with your feet and shoulders. This will allow you to create more left-to-right motion down the lane. The bowling ball should still be waist height and centered to your chin.
Whichever ball speed adjustment you choose, give yourself enough room to slide at the foul line. If you’re coming up short and not sliding enough to reach the foul line, move up and if you’re sliding too much, move back.
