Goa’s famous tiatrist Young Chico passed away on Wednesday at GMC hospital where he was undergoing treatment for hip replacement. As per information, the tiatrist, aged 67, died of cardiac arrest.
Original name being Francisco Xavier Paulino Dias dos Miligres Bringel, Young Chico was known as a man with golden voice. He is survived by his wife Connie and children Anthony and Bushka.
Young Chico was the grandson of illustrious poet Paulino Dias. He started his singing career when he joined the Band Imaginations. From there he went on to sing for tiatrs and his first appearance on the tiatr stage was in ‘Seza Pai’ of Star of Curtorim in 1976 where he got his stage name Young Chico.
Coming from a Portuguese family who spoke Portuguese as first language, Chico could sing in Konkani and English effortlessly.
He performed with top artists of yesteryears including Jacinto Vaz, M Boyer and Remy Colaco.
It was during his performance in the tiatr ‘Sounsar Sudhorlo’ of M Boyer in Delhi when he first met Connie, his wife, who is the sister of famous jazz singers Joe and Babush at national level.
He also sang in the film ‘Adeus Moga’, directed by his daughter Bushka. His popular songs like ‘Milana’ written by Tomazinho Cardozo, ‘Novro’ can still be heard on FM radio.
Young Chico has received awards such as Kala Gaurav Puraskar from Directorate of Art and Culture, Lifetime Contribution Award from the Tiatr Academy of Goa, Golden Voice Award from Abu Dhabi. The funeral service will be held on January 4, at 4.30 pm, at St Diogo church in Guirim.
