In the wake of Capt Viriato Fernandes, the candidate of the Congress INDIA bloc, winning the South Goa Lok Sabha seat on Tuesday, the party declared its confidence to form the government in the state in the 2027 assembly polls.
The results of the Lok Sabha election, according to party president Amit Patkar, demonstrated that the party’s campaign had reached the grassroots level and that, in spite of its limited resources, it had set an example for 2027. “The outcome demonstrates that we have made headway and that meetings have been held in every constituency. It was an election of the people. We have demonstrated to the BJP its defeat while also demonstrating that the Congress party will form the government in the state in 2027, despite our lack of resources and leaders”.
Opposition leader Yuri Alemao said the alliance had done well to upset the BJP, citing the nation’s overall outcome. “When considering the nation as a whole, the INDIA bloc performed admirably and should serve as a cautionary tale for the BJP. By remaining a cohesive opposition, we have demonstrated that Goa is inseparable. I think Congress will surpass 30 seats to form the next Goa government in 2027. Additionally, there will be problems in Goa if there is turbulence in the centre. We won this semifinal, and we will win the championship game in 2027 as well. The government will be led by Congress” said Alemao.
GFP President and Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai said, “The Indian bloc will remain united. We will defend it at all levels, from the panchayat to the assembly and the parliament, as it was designed to safeguard democracy and
national unity.”
Today in parliament we have a person from Goa who has served in the military.”
