Andrew J. Nathan, Class of 1919 Professor of Political Science, Columbia University
Andrew J. Nathan is Class of 1919 Professor of Political Science at Columbia University. His teaching and research interests include Chinese politics and foreign policy, the comparative study of political participation and political culture, and human rights. Nathan is also chair of the steering committee of the Center for the Study of Human Rights and chair of the Morningside Institutional Review Board (IRB) at Columbia. He served previously as the university’s department chair of political science from 2003 to 2006, chair of the Executive Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences from 2002 to 2003, and director of the Weatherhead East Asian Institute from 1991 to 1995. Professor Nathan also serves on the National Endowment for Democracy’s Board of Directors, onthe Journal of Democracy’s editorial board, and on the International Forum for Democratic Studies’ Research Council. A world-renowned scholar, Professor Nathan is the author or editor of twelve books on China and East Asia, including China’s Transition (1997) and The Tiananmen Papers, co-edited with Perry Link (2001). His articles have appeared in World Politics, Daedalus, The China Quarterly, Journal of Democracy, Asian Survey, The New Republic, The New York Review of Books, The London Review of Books, The Asian Wall Street Journal, the Boston Globe, the International Herald Tribune, and elsewhere. His latest book is China’s Search for Security (co-authored with Andrew Scobell, 2012). Professor Nathan received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. from Harvard University.
