For over two months, Iranians have taken to the streets to demand legal and social rights following the death of 22 year-old Mahsa Amini. Women and young people are at the forefront of the movement that has spread across the country. In the face of the regime’s brutal crackdown, human rights advocates stress the need for solidarity with Iranians.
“World solidarity with the Iranian people right now is of the utmost importance,” said Ladan Boroumand, a historian and the cofounder of the Abdorrahman Boroumand Center for Human Rights in Iran, a NED partner. “Girls are down there. They are putting their lives at stake. They are fighting for their own life, for hope, for democracy in Iran. But they are also fighting for your democracy. So don’t forget them.”
