Alicia Barnett will race at the inaugural Formula Woman Nations Cup after finishing fifth in qualifying at Dubai Autodrome
Southwell racing driver Alicia Barrett has secured a place on the grid at next year’s inaugural Formula Woman Nations Cup.
The 20-year-old took fifth place in a qualifying event at the Dubai Autodrome before Christmas.
Forty females took part in the qualifier, driving Radical SR3s.
The ground-breaking competition attracted competitors from 26 countries, taking part in a time trial to meet the qualifying criteria for a seat on the grid next year.
The Formula Woman Nations Cup aims to redefine the landscape for women in motorsport.
“It was only my second time out in a Radical,” said Barrett.
“I was pleased with fifth but a problem with the car in the second session meant I didn’t get a chance to improve my time further in the qualifier.
“I felt I had more to give and have my hopes set on a podium next year.
“My race craft experience from karting should also stand me in good stead in the Nations Cup race.”
Formula Woman is an international community of over 5,000 females from all walks of life.
It offers a safe and encouraging community for females in motorsport with competitions, thought-provoking events, a range of activities and networking.
The Formula Woman Nations Cup evolved from this community and will take place at Dubai Autodrome from May 1-4.
Barrett said: “Without Formula Woman, many of the women taking part wouldn’t have the finances or opportunity to compete in a competition like this.
“Successful qualifiers will earn a partially funded seat in the Nations Cup, with just their insurance, travel expenses and testing to fund.
“This race gives women the opportunity to showcase their talent in a supportive environment and at an incredible location - the Dubai Autodrome.”
A former European karting champion, Barrett has been involved in motorsport since she was eight-years-old and currently combines working as a driver coach and mechanic with her final-year degree studies at Nottingham Trent University.
She is looking to secure sponsorship for testing sessions in the Radical SR3 before the Nations Cup in Dubai.
