Sake, Democratic Republic of Congo: Soldiers of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo ride on top of a tank on January 23 as they advance toward Sake, amid fighting to halt the advance of M23 rebels. Four days later, the Rwanda-backed group announced it had captured the city of Goma, 25km away in the east of the country. The rebels’ offensive came amid one of Africa’s longest wars and threatened to further displace civilians.
