Who Are Jimmy Carter's Children? He Leaves Behind 3 Sons and a Daughter

Former President Jimmy Carter died at the age of 100 as confirmed by his family to the media on Sunday afternoon.

"My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love," James Carter, who went by the name "Chip," said in a statement released Sunday. "My brothers, sister, and I shared him with the rest of the world through these common beliefs."

"The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we thank you for honoring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs," chip said.

Carter has the distinction of being the longest-lived U.S. president, followed by President George Herbert Walker Bush, who died in 2018 at the age of 94.

Carter, who held office between 1977 and 1981, is survived by his sons John William, James Earl and Donnel Jeffrey; his daughter, Amy; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. His wife, Rosalynn Carter, died at the age of 99 last year following a months-long stay hospice care.

John William "Jack" Carter

The former president's eldest child, John William Carter, 75, was born in Portsmouth, Virginia.

Following his father's suggestion, John Carter served in the U.S. Navy, and did so during the Vietnam War. He built a career in investing and finance.

He is a businessman who won the Democratic nomination for a Senate seat representing Nevada, but lost to the Republican incumbent in 2006. His Senate platform included opposition to the Iraq War and pushing for health care to better cover veterans.

John Carter is married to Elizabeth Brasfield. He has two children, Jason and Sarah, from a previous marriage and two stepchildren, John and Sarah.

James Earl "Chip" Carter III

President Carter's second eldest child, James Earl Carter III, 72, was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. He also has a daughter, Margaret.

He was involved with the Democratic National Committee and worked in business, but little is known about him besides that.

His son, James Carter IV, helped uncover a video that damaged Republican nominee Mitt Romney during the 2012 presidential election.

Then-incumbent President Barack Obama personally thanked James Carter IV for helping find the video.

Donnel Jeffrey "Jeff" Carter

The former president's third child, Donnel Carter, 70, was born in New London, Connecticut.

He co-founded the computer-mapping firm Computer Mapping Consultants that did work for World Bank in 1978 as well as some foreign governments until it went out of business. Donnel Carter has three sons.

Amy Lynn Carter

President Carter's youngest child, Amy Carter, 55, was born in Plains, Georgia. She has one son, Hugo.

She began living in the White House at the age of nine and was the first young child to move in since the early 1960s when John F. Kennedy was president.

Amy Carter was a political activist who participated in sit-ins in the 1980s and 1990s and was arrested at a protest against CIA recruitment at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1986.

Amy Carter later worked with her father on the book The Little Baby Snoogle-Fleejer about a boy who becomes friends with a monster. Jimmy Carter wrote the book while Amy illustrated it.
