An arrest report released Tuesday revealed that Seattle Seahawks backup quarterback Geno Smith was driving erratically through multiple lanes at 96 miles per hour in a 60-mph zone when he was pulled over by Washington State Patrol officers and arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Smith was arrested just after 2 a.m. Monday morning hours after the Seahawks had returned to Seattle following their game against the Arizona Cardinals Sunday night, according to ESPN.
After the state trooper "detected a strong odor of intoxicants and observed the driver had bloodshot, watery eyes," Smith told the officer he had drank some wine earlier, but had not been drinking for at least 90 minutes before he was pulled over, according to the arrest report.
He was taken to King County Correctional Facility and subsequently released on bail after he refused to take a breath test and reportedly struggled when he was taken to a local hospital to have blood drawn to be tested after a judge issued a search warrant allowing for the procedure.
John Fox, Smith's attorney, released a statement Monday to say that Smith is cooperating with the ongoing investigation as officers wait for the tests to come back to determine if he was intoxicated.
"I hope that an open mind can be kept by all as the facts are ascertained," Fox said.
Earlier this month, Las Vegas Raiders rookie Nate Hobbs was arrested on suspicion of DUI after police found him unconscious at the wheel around 4 a.m.
In November, another former Raiders player, Henry Ruggs, was arrested and currently faces charges of DUI and reckless driving after he was alleged to be twice the legal limit of blood-alcohol content when he reached speeds over 150 mph before getting in an accident that caused a woman's death.
Smith was taken to a hospital where he became agitated prior to the blood draw, even with the Seahawks' director of team security tried to calm Smith, according to the report. Restraints were used to complete the process, troopers wrote.
Smith just completed his third season with the Seahawks and had the most extensive playing time of his tenure in Seattle. He appeared in four games and started three while Russell Wilson was out due to finger surgery. Smith threw for 702 yards and five touchdowns with one interception.
He is on a one-year contract and will be a free agent after the end of the current NFL season.
Smith had appeared in just one game during his first two seasons with Seattle.
