Hillside man arrested after police say he fled accident scene that left 2 seriously injured

HILLSIDE — A Hillside man was arrested after police said he fled the scene of an accident that left two people seriously injured and a car erupting in flames early this morning.

Daisha Fields, of East Orange, and Latoya Grant, of Newark, both sustained serious head trauma after authorities said a Lexus driven by Ishmael Harrison, 26, of Hillside struck their vehicle at around 2:30 a.m. at the intersection of North Avenue and Jerome Avenue.

Police said Harrison left the accident scene on foot as his car burst into flames. He was arrested shortly thereafter after on charges of leaving the scene of an accident and resisting arrest after police officer Michael Flowers and his K-9 partner “Champion” found him hiding in some bushes nearby.

As of this afternoon, Grant was listed in critical condition at University Hospital in Newark. Police did not provide details on the condition of Fields. The accident and subsequent care fire closed North Avenue for six hours.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation and police have not yet determined if alcohol was a factor. Police are asking anyone who witnessed the accident to contact the Hillside Police Department at 973-926-5800.
