Is there a backup or construction on the Delaware Memorial Bridge?
Motorists using the twin spans can now find out via Twitter.
The Delaware River and Bay Authority, operators of the bridge between New Castle, Del., and
, have launched a Twitter page dedicated to the Delaware Memorial Bridge.
Followers of the Twitter feed
will receive traffic advisories, construction updates and additional information regarding the twin-span bridges between Delaware and New Jersey.
“Our Twitter feed enables us to communicate vital information to customers within moments,” said
, DRBA executive director.
“With so many people on Twitter, we are really looking forward to the effectiveness of our latest means of keeping drivers informed and making their commutes as hassle-free as possible.”
staff members monitoring traffic cameras and coordinating with Authority police and toll personnel at the bridge toll plaza will maintain the feed. The Authority plans to use the social media site to post traffic alerts, accident news, weather-related road conditions and interesting bridge related facts.
Staff will also tweet information regarding planned lane closures for construction and maintenance.
Green stressed, however, that the
Twitter page will not be monitored 24/7. In cases of emergencies, drivers should call 911. In addition, the authority urges drivers to refrain from mobile internet browsing while behind the wheel.
Originally constructed in 1951 and 1968, respectively, the Delaware Memorial Bridge’s 3,650-feet twin spans are crossed by more than 80,000 vehicles each day.
