$80,000 Scratch-it winner
May 12, 2020 – Salem, Ore. – The are a multitude of ways to play Oregon Lottery Scratch-its. Some people scratch to see the prizes first, some go line by line. Others simply scratch the barcode and scan the tickets to find out they won. Then you have Harry Goodier of Springfield.
Goodier’s system for playing Scratch-its paid off this week -- scratching the game part of the ticket first, then revealing his prize.
“I like to not see the prizes until I’m done,” Goodier said. “I saw I had a winner, went back, and when it said $80,000 I couldn’t believe it.”
Goodier won $80,000, the top prize, on the $10 Bonus Slots Scratch-it. As of Tuesday, May 12, one top prize remained on the popular Scratch-it. Goodier purchased his ticket the Chevron on 42nd Street in Springfield when he stopped for an energy drink.
“As I was checking out, that Scratch-it called my name,” Goodier laughed. “After I scratched it, I checked it on the mobile app, and when I got the balloons and ‘Congratulations Harry!’ I knew it was real.”
To protect the health and safety of its employees and the public, the Oregon Lottery has temporarily closed the Salem and Wilsonville Lottery offices. “We normally play Video Lottery, and when we went to the market we saw the Scratch-its and decided to play,” she said. “The first ticket we played was the winner. I was in shock – I am still in shock.”
Instead of coming home with snacks, Salas Laris said she came home with the down payment for some property.
“I haven’t been able to sleep, I’m so excited,” she said. “I have a down payment now, it’s great.”
Salas Laris turned the $5 Lucky Lemons Scratch-it she purchased at the Minute Mart in Medford, into $50,000, that’s a lot of lemonade! She then contacted the Oregon Lottery to claim her prize.

$6.3 million Megabucks winner
March 27, 2020 - Salem, Ore. – Robert (Bob) McCauley of Mt. Vernon is the Oregon Lottery's newest Megabucks jackpot winner. McCauley matched all six of his numbers – on a free Megabucks ticket he'd won from a previous drawing – and won the $6.3 million jackpot for the Monday, Mar. 23 Megabucks drawing.
“I decided to go to the Post Office,” said McCauley. “It’s only a couple of blocks away.” Luckily for him, as he passed the Blue Mountain Mini Mart on his way to the Post Office, he thought he’d check his Megabucks ticket from the last drawing and get a new ticket for the next drawing.
Practicing good social distancing, McCauley went to the Mini Mart’s drive-up window to make his Lottery purchase. Working at the store was Mini Mart Manager Jolene Moulton. “I checked Bob’s ticket and actually gave him the voucher slip that came with his free ticket,” said Jolene. “As he was walking away, I saw the free play ticket sitting on the counter and realized Bob had the wrong ticket. I called him back to the window gave him the free ticket.”
The next day, McCauley had a knock on his door at home. “It was Bill, from the city,” said McCauley. “I answered the door and Bill says, ‘Bob. You need to check your ticket because Jolene thinks you may have won the lottery.’” Knowing the winning jackpot ticket had been sold in Mt. Vernon, population 512, and knowing she’d sold only three Megabucks tickets at the Mini Mart for Monday’s Megabucks drawing, Jolene dispatched Bill to McCauley’s house.
McCauley asked his daughter, Pam, to check the winning numbers online. They soon learned that Jolene’s hunch was true “Pam was screaming and jumping up and down,” said McCauley. “I was cool as a cucumber.”
After calling the Lottery to make an appointment, Bob arrived in Salem Thursday, Mar. 26 with a small group of family and friends to claim his prize. Asked what he was going to buy first, he said his wife wanted a new refrigerator. And after the fridge, Bob will get a new truck.
McCauley chose to take the bulk-sum option, which splits the prize in half, and after taxes, he took home $2.14 million.

$1 million raffle winner
March 20, 2020 - Salem, Ore. – After Ann Charkowicz and her husband Brian saved a toddler from being hit by a car, she had a "good feeling" and purchased an Oregon Lottery Raffle ticket that won her $1 million.
The Coos Bay couple, who have been married for 36 years, were getting ready for a vacation to hunt for agates when they noticed a toddler walking into a busy street. They got the child home safely, and after the vacation Ann decided to purchase the tickets.
"I figured I did something good, something good might happen to me," Ann said.
Ann purchased the winning $1 million jackpot ticket at the Safeway where she works in Coos Bay, on Johnson Avenue. Ann has worked for the company for 34 years.
Earlier this week, when the Raffle winning numbers were announced, she printed the numbers to post them for customers. When she looked at the printout, the winning number looked familiar. When she checked her ticket, she couldn't believe it.
"The first thing I said to Brian was, 'How much do we need for me to retire?'" she said. "I had a feeling I was going to win, and it came true. It was karma."
The couple took home $680,000 after taxes and said they were going to save the money until things stabilize with the economy. She did say she may try to reduce her hours at work.
"It is crazy right now," Brian said. "We are being extremely careful with this money."
Officials with Safeway said currently their staff is so busy keeping up with shopping demand, that it was great to hear some good news.
"We are so thrilled for Ann!" said Jill McGinnis, director of communications and public affairs for Safeway. "Our employees work so hard, now more than ever. I can't think of a better time for her to win. I hope that she feels a great sense of security because of this -- and has some fun too!"
The winning number was 080948. There are a total of 1801 winning tickets, with one $1 million prize, 300 prizes of $500 and 1,500 prizes of $100. For a complete list of winning numbers visit the Oregon Lottery's Raffle website at oregonlottery.org/raffle.
$1 million Mega Millions winner
March 9, 2020 – Salem, Ore. – A Tualatin Air Force veteran had the shock of his life when he realized he won $1 million playing Mega Millions.
James Robbins of Tualatin purchased his $2 Mega Millions ticket at his local Fred Meyer, with one set of numbers, for the Feb. 21 drawing. A few days later he took the ticket to the customer service desk, where the clerk told him he’d have to claim his prize at an Oregon Lottery payment center because he’d won more than $600. Last Friday, he visited the Oregon Lottery’s Wilsonville Payment Center, where he learned he had matched 5 numbers but missed the Mega Ball – meaning he won $1 million.
“I was so shocked I started shaking and the staff asked me if I wanted some water,” he said. “They also had me sign the back of the ticket and told me that I had to go to Salem to get the prize. I kept saying ‘Are you serious?’”
Since Robbins was so excited, he opted to get a friend to drive him to Oregon Lottery headquarters where he claimed his prize this week. Oregon Lottery’s Wilsonville Payment Center can only pay out prizes up to $50,000.
“I plan on helping my daughter out with the prize, otherwise I am going to be saving it,” he said.
This is the second large prize Fred Meyer has been responsible for this year, and officials said they think 2020 is off to a great start.
“Fred Meyer is proud to offer Oregon Lottery at our stores. We are excited to have sold a $1 million winning Mega Millions ticket at our Tualatin store,” said Jeffery Temple, Director of Corporate Affairs. “This is the second large prize we have sold this year. So far, 2020 is a good year to purchase Lottery tickets at Fred Meyer!”
$71,000 Keno winner
March 9, 2020 – Salem, Ore. – Grayson Boyte of Maupin, purchased a Keno 8-spot ticket during dinner and a drink at the Rainbow Tavern. When he left, little did he know that the ticket he left sitting on the bar was worth over $71,000. Not only did he leave his winning ticket behind, he hadn't signed the back of the ticket either – meaning anyone could have claimed the jackpot.
“I got all the way out to my truck when it hit me, I didn’t pick up my ticket,” he said. “I went back inside and scanned it, and they told me they didn’t know how much it was, but that it was more than $600.”
The next day Boyte, who is in construction, was joking with his employees about how much the ticket was worth, betting lunch on how much the ticket was.
“All the bets were less than $5,000,” he said. “When I found out it was a ticket worth $71,000? I was saying HOLY COW!”
Boyte plans to purchase a new trailer for his construction business with the $71,826 win – and buy his crew lunch.
“I owe the bartender who didn’t throw my ticket away or claim it,” he said. “That was great customer service.”
$250,000 Scratch-it winner
March 4, 2020 – Salem, Ore. -- When Ruth Wallace sent her fiancé Scott O'Neil to the store for groceries, a Scratch-it worth $250,000 was not on the list.
Normally Ruth purchases the Scratch-its, and only every so often, she said. However, this time Scott bought the tickets and happened to pick up some of the $20 Scratch-its.
“We usually buy the $5, $2 or $1 tickets,” she said. “I was shocked he got some $20 tickets. I thought that was extravagant.”
That is, until the Klamath Falls couple scratched the tickets. Each ticket Ruth scratched were winning tickets, they said. Every single ticket Scott touched, was a non-winner.
“Then I scratched my last ticket and thought it was a $250 winner. That made me pretty excited,” Scott said. “Then Ruth looked at it and realized it was actually $250,000!”
Scott purchased the $20 Cash Spectacular Scratch-it at the Madison Market on 6th Street in Klamath Falls. After taxes the couple took home $170,000.
The couple said they were moving into a new home soon, so the winnings will go toward new furniture and moving expenses. They also said they may purchase new cars.
$250,000 Scratch-it win
A Harrisburg couple, on the drive home from the Oregon Coast after celebrating their ninth wedding anniversary, thought the day couldn’t get much better. That all changed when they realized they’d won $250,000 playing an Oregon Lottery Scratch-it.
“We stopped to get gas and noticed on a billboard that the Mega Millions and Powerball jackpots all had a 4 in them,” Riley Ross said. “Then we looked on the mobile app and saw that Megabucks was at $4.4 million and decided we needed to get four of each.”
When they purchased their tickets, Ross said he spotted the $20 VIP Black Scratch-its and decided to get two.
“Normally we play twice a month and break even,” said Jerrica Ross. “We also take them home to play, but for some reason we decided to scratch them in the car. We couldn’t believe it when I scanned it with the app and it said that we’d won $250,000!”
Jerrica said after her tears stopped, the Harrisburg couple decided what they were going to do with the money.
“We are paying off all of our bills and our house,” Riley said. “It’s basically a reset for our finances. It’s a great anniversary present!”
The couple bought their winning ticket at the Shell Station in Monmouth.
Win for Life winner: $1,000 a week for life
January 23, 2020 - Salem, Ore. – It's been a very busy 12 months for Todd Williams. The Portland man got married, a got a new car and purchased a home, and after all that, won the Oregon Lottery.
“Now I can pay for it all,” Williams said when he claimed the top Win for Life prize of $1,000 a week for life.
Earlier this month, five minutes before he had to leave for work, Williams realized he won the Oregon Lottery’s Win for Life game. Williams, a regular Win for Life player, noticed his tickets while getting ready for work, and used the Lottery’s mobile app to scan the tickets.
“I had three or four tickets and I saw the story of the guy who put his Megabucks ticket through the washing machine and decided to check my tickets before work,” Williams said. “When I saw the animations on the app that I had won, I just kept scanning.”
Williams said he wanted to see the animations the mobile app plays when you scan a winning ticket -- blue confetti, fireworks, balloons and many others. He also couldn’t believe he won.
“I was so shocked, I ended up calling work and telling them I would be late,” he said. “I worked my shift, but obviously I had other things on my mind.”
With all of his major life changes in the past year, all he could say was, “Great timing!”
Williams purchased the winning ticket at the Fred Meyer on NE Glisan, in Portland and officials with the company said they were excited to have sold the top prize and were proud to be an Oregon Lottery retailer.
Joseph Garza
$100,000 Powerball winner
January 8, 2020 - Salem, Ore. – Joseph Garza from Portland knows the person who is responsible for his $100,000 Powerball win - his father.
“When I won, the first thing I did was call my mom and say that my dad was sending us a miracle,” Garza said of his father who passed away last August. “Part of the prize is going to go to for a donation to the church where we held his service. It was beautiful and they did a great job.”
Garza won using the numbers he has played for the past three years, a combination of his old baseball jersey and birthdays of family members. He won after purchasing a $9 Powerball ticket with the Power Play option for the Jan. 4 drawing. The jackpot for that drawing was $237 million.
Garza matched four of five numbers one of which being the Powerball number, meaning he was one number away from the jackpot prize. Luckily, Garza spent the extra $1 per drawing to get the Power Play option. When players add Power Play, prizes other than the jackpot can be multiplied up to 10 times. In this case, the Power Play number was 2, thus doubling his prize from $50,000, to $100,000.
“I always play with the Power Play,” he said. “I figured if I got lucky, then it would really pay off! It did, I won another $50,000 because of it!”
Garza purchased his winning ticket from the Plaid Pantry on SW Broadway in Portland and joins other Oregon Lottery winners who have won more than $38 billion in prizes since 1985.
The Oregon Lottery reminds players to always sign the back of their Lottery tickets, regardless of the game. In the event of winning a jackpot, they should consult with a trusted financial planner or similar professional to develop a plan for their winnings. Prize winners of more than $50,000 are advised to contact the Lottery office and schedule an appointment to claim their prize.
$8.4 million Megabucks jackpot winner
January 15, 2020 - Salem, Ore. – Laundry day got very exciting for a Portland man who accidentally washed his wallet, with an Oregon's Game Megabucks ticket worth $8.4 million inside.
“I washed my wallet and then realized I had Lottery tickets in there,” said Scott Moe, who won the prize. “A couple of the tickets were destroyed, but not the jackpot ticket.”
Moe was piecing together his laundered lottery tickets right before bed, and after utilizing the Lottery’s ticket-scanning app for the first time and realizing he had won the $8.4 million jackpot, it was midnight. Moe said that luckily the ticket worth $8.4 million was the last one he bought and protected by other tickets in his wallet.
“I didn’t sleep until later the next day,” he said. “My mind was racing!”
Moe brought the ticket to the Oregon Lottery Friday, Jan. 10 to verify it was the winning ticket. Then he took advantage of leaving the ticket at the Lottery, while he determined the best way to claim his prize. Players can leave their validated tickets at the Oregon Lottery office for up to 60 days, while they decide how to take their prize, either in a one-time lump sum or 30 annual payments. When Moe came back Monday, he said he contacted a financial advisor and was working on a plan.
Moe took the bulk-sum option, which splits the prize in half to $4.2 million, and after taxes, Moe took home $2.85 million.
Moe purchased the ticket from the Buy2 on SW Oleson Road in Portland. Officials with the company said this was the first time one of their stores had sold a jackpot ticket, and they were very excited for Moe and to be a supporter of the Oregon Lottery.
“We are very happy to be able to help support such great state programs the Lottery helps to fund,” said Emily Valentine, marketing manager for Buy2.
For selling the winning ticket Buy2 will receive a 1-percent selling bonus of $84,000.
