Approach
We strategized that an interactive experience would be an important way to engage our audience by visually outlining the problem and inviting users to interact with the data and information.
This level of interactive involvement would offer clear and specific ways for Mainers to protect themselves and their families.
Inspired by our natural surroundings right here in Maine, we began by designing a series of illustrations that would feel appropriate and recognizable to our audience. Working from this illustration style we broke our messaging up into snackable sections that users could interact with easily.
Data Visualization
We offer access to the data, break it down, support it with compelling visuals, and provide links to learn more. Users are meaningfully engaged and educated since they can click through and focus on information that’s relevant to them.
Posters
To support the website launch, we designed a series of posters that are downloadable from the site for users to either print out or post online.
“I look forward to any opportunity to show off this website—which was a labor of love for our entire team. The fact that it won 3 Gold Davey Awards is rewarding, but what’s more rewarding is that every Mainer we’ve showed the site to has been surprised and fascinated by the data.”

Impact
During the first week of launch, our users were spending almost 4 minutes per session. With an average bounce rate for a site like this being roughly 62%, our bounce rate since launch has been just 46%. And 22% of our visitors have returned to the site more than once. All this tells us that our users are very actively engaged with our content. The site has also won 3 Gold Davey Awards for Excellence in Design for Best Use of Animation/Illustration, Best Data Visualization, and Best Visual Appeal.
