Yamanashi Prefecture (山梨県) introduces this landlocked prefecture in the Chubu region of central Japan. It is 4,465 sq km, ranking it 32nd in size among the 47 prefectures of the country. The prefectural capital is the city of Kofu.

Yamanashi Prefecture has a population of 890,000 (2011 estimate). It is one of the less densely populated prefectures of the country, being in the 41st position. This is due mainly to its mountainous terrain. Neighbouring prefectures include Saitama Prefecture to the north, Tokyo Metropolis to the northeast, Kanagawa Prefecture to the east, Shizuoka Prefecture to the south and Nagano Prefecture to the west. Mount Fuji, the tallest mountain in Japan, is on the border of Yamanashi Prefecture and Shizuoka Prefecture.

Despite being a mountainous prefecture, Yamanashi Prefecture has industrialized. Among the industries here include jewelry and robotics. It is also a major fruit producer, mainly concentrating on grapes, peaches and plums. Close to half the mineral water bottled in Japan comes from Yamanashi, particularly within the Southern Alps.

Going to Yamanashi Prefecture

You can reach Yamanashi Prefecture by taking the Chuo Line and Minobu Line trains from Tokyo. The fastest trains can take you from Shinjuku Station to Kofu Station within an hour and 25 minutes. This is faster but more expensive than taking the bus.
