High molecular weight polyethylene (HMWPE) provides excellent resistance to moisture, abrasion, and corrosive chemicals when used to insulate cables for cathodic protection. It works by converting the anodic (active) sites on a metal surface into cathodic (passive) sites through the application of electrical current. When the current reaches the cathode faster than oxygen, it can slow or even prevent corrosion entirely.
