I've always wanted a stained wood door, but my goodness are they expensive! DIY Front Door Makeover: Refinish Your Stained Wood Door for Lasting Curb Appeal

If your stained wood front door is looking old and weathered, or you want to change your stain color, you can refinish it yourself with a few tools and several hours of work. You will need a step stool or ladder, screwdriver, painter's tape, drop cloth or old newspaper, sandpaper, stain in the color of your choice, and spar urethane for exterior applications. Here’s the tutorial lots have been asking for! This is such a doable project with a big impact. To summarize:

1. I cleaned the door really well with a prepaint cleaner.
2. I did two coats with the wood fibre paint. I did it all with a brush and tried to create “wood grain” with my brush strokes.
3. I heavily applied GEL stain with a rag then used a chip brush to spread it evenly and again give the appearance of wood grain.
4. After a looong time drying (a few days), I applied two coats of triple thick poly topcoat.
5. I replaced the hardware and added the faux window mullions.
