This patient presents with an anterior shoulder (glenohumeral) dislocation and the axillary nerve is a common concomitant injury. The glenohumeral joint represents the most commonly dislocated major joint. The joint may dislocate anteriorly (most common), posteriorly or inferiorly. The injury is most commonly sustained in young patients during athletic activities involving rapid movements and in older people with axial trauma (e.g. fall on outstretched arm).
