Poseidon, the father of Nausithous, who is the father of Alcinous, or the king of Phaecia, got upset when his son kept on helping people who came to Scheria, Nausithous' island. Poseidon told his son that if he kept on aiding people, he would destroy their ships and put a mound blocking their harbor. This event occurred in the epic The Odyssey.
Poseidon controlled the ocean, so all tides, floods, and the fate of sailors were under his care. His wrath could cause earthquakes, which is why he is sometimes known as the Earth Shaker.
Cecrops (first king of Athens) had to find a patron god for his city state and the two gods, Poseidon and Athena, both vied to fill this position. So, Cecrops told them both to offer a gift that was truly valuable to Athens. Poseidon created a salt water spring. Athena planted an olive branch, creating an olive tree. Cecrops decided Athena's gift to be most valuable and chose her over Poseidon. But, angry Poseidon cursed Athens to never have enough water from then on.
The gum, Trident, is the name of the weapon of choice of Poseidon, the trident. This gum is named this due to it having three layers and comes from the word tri-, or three. This is why Poseidon's trident is called a trident because it has three points. But, since we can't chew gum at school I didn't bring this candy in.
Poseidon was responsible for events that were associated to the sea world such as when ships were saved or demolished. Poseidon was the creator of tempests, earthquakes, drowning lands, and shattering rocks.
Poseidon was second in command to Zeus (whose face can be seen in the clouds just to Poseidon's left). So, this means that Poseidon is the second most powerful god on Olympus.
The planet Neptune is named after Poseidon's Roman name, Neptune. One reason this planet was named after this god is due to its blue green color, similar to the color of the ocean.
This is a bowl with the image of Poseidon and the other Greeks that fought during the Trojan War. Poseidon walked and fought among the Greeks in the disguise of a human to try and help them defeat the Trojans. This event takes place during the Iliad by Vergil.
Poseidon was lonely, causing him to be angry and create storms. Poseidon sought a wife and came upon Amphitrite, a blonde haired blue eyed nymph who lived on the island Naxos. Poseidon asked her to marry him but she denied, saying she disliked his violent nature. Poseidon then sent his messenger Delphinus, the dolphin king, to locate Amphitrite and win her heart. After Delphinus' long journey he told the nymph that Poseidon would never cause harm again if she married him and Amphitrite did.
Poseidon desired Demeter. So, to put off Poseidon, Demeter (or Ceres) told him to make the most beautiful animal. So, to impress Demeter, Poseidon created the first horse. But, his first attempts to create this animal were unsuccessful and created a variety of other animals. As planned by Demeter, Poseidon's feelings for the goddess had gone away.
I brought in this candy because fish are one of the main symbols of Poseidon. Also, the color red is the color most commonly associated with anger, which also represents the moody god Poseidon.
The word Neptunian refers to the actions of water forming geology (such as dikes, which are sheets of rock formed in a crack in a pre-existing rock body). This word comes from Poseidon's Roman name, Neptune.
Poseidon helped to build the walls of Troy during the Iliad. In return, he is promised gifts from the king of Troy, but instead is banished with nothing. This event enrages Poseidon and causes him to send a sea monster to attack the Trojans and stands against them throughout the war.
Poseidon is the god that is furious with The Odyssey's main character, Odysseus. Poseidon's son, Polyphemus, is blinded by Odysseus, causing this moody god to be furious. Poseidon then stops at nothing to thwart Odysseus' passage back home to Ithaca.
The bull is also a symbol associated with Poseidon. This is so because, in ancient Greece, bulls were often sacrificed to Poseidon. Also, the bull was accidentally created when Poseidon was trying to make the horse
