Conroe's man-made crater
CRATER LAKE, near Conroe, TX. It looks like an ordinary lake today, however in 1933, Standard Oil drilled an oil well that came in as a gusher. The gas gushing out of the well ignited and burned for months. A huge crater formed, swallowing the drilling rig as well as another nearby. The crater quickly spread into an uncontrolled lake of burning oil. Dubbed the “Conroe Crater, the crater was thought to be about 600 feet deep after the fire was extinguished and water filled it in.
