The Abel Tasman Track is pure bliss for someone wanting to do a multi-day hike that's not too steep, not too long, has paradise views all the way and a water taxi service to take all the hassle out of bags and transport. At points it didn't feel like a hike, but a holiday stroll from beach to beach.

In 1642, Dutch explorer Abel Tasman sailed into Golden Bay / Mohua, where a cultural misunderstanding led to a violent encounter with local Māori, Ngāti Tumatakōkiri. They challenged the ships, and when Tasman’s crew fired a cannon, tensions escalated. A confrontation the next day resulted in the deaths of four Dutch sailors, leading Tasman to name the bay "Murderers' Bay" and depart, marking the first recorded European-Māori conflict.
