Bitumen is the heavy end (i.e. higher molecular weight) residue from the fractionation of crude oil. When you have extracted such things as fuels, fuel oils, lubricating oils and waxes from the crude oil, what is left is a thick sticky black liquid, consistency anything from "treacle" up to a firm glassy amorphous sold.
