The later Aztec culture saw the Toltecs as their intellectual and cultural predecessors and described Toltec culture emanating from Tōllān [ˈtoːlːaːn] (Nahuatl for Tula) as the epitome of civilization;

Toltecs had no writing language, but appeared before the Aztecs settled down in present day Mexico City. Toltecs settled in Tula, "the Place of the Reeds" in 968 as their capital. They were "master stone carvers" and smelt metal. Their civilization collapsed around 1150.
