Sedge vs. Sandspur
Many people confuse sedges with sandspurs. Sedges thrive in St Augustine lawns and since sedges grow faster than St Augustine they can be seen as wispy green leaves scattered above a lawn a few days after mowing. Sandspurs rarely grow in a fertile, well-watered lawn. Sandspurs prefer poor dry sandy roadsides - where you park to bare foot it to the beach (painful).
St Augustine Grass Mowing Height
Myth #2 â ALL LAWNS SHOULD BE SHORT TO LOOK GOOD - While it is true some grasses look better mowed low, St Augustine looks best when mowed at 4â or higher. A tall St Augustine lawn will look great â it will be greener, thicker, and have fewer weeds and pest problems â you just canât play croquet on a St Augustine lawn.

Brown Patch: In Pinellas, this fungus is a sub-lethal but will turn a beautiful lawn from perfect to "what the heck happened" overnight. Since it is a soil borne disease, it is hard to prevent. No good prevention as preventative treatments are expensive and curative treatments of a fungicide help but the damage is done. Solution: At APL Lawn Spraying we keep the potassium levels high and nitrogen levels low to reduce occurrence.
