Many people confuse sedges with sandspurs. Sedges thrive in St Augustine lawns and since sedges grow faster than St Augustine they can be seen as wispy green leaves scattered above a lawn a few days after mowing. Sandspurs rarely grow in a fertile, well-watered lawn. Sandspurs prefer poor dry sandy roadsides - where you park to bare foot it to the beach (painful). St Augustine Grass Mowing Height
Myth #2 – ALL LAWNS SHOULD BE SHORT TO LOOK GOOD - While it is true some grasses look better mowed low, St Augustine looks best when mowed at 4” or higher. A tall St Augustine lawn will look great – it will be greener, thicker, and have fewer weeds and pest problems – you just can’t play croquet on a St Augustine lawn.

Brown Patch: In Pinellas, this fungus is a sub-lethal but will turn a beautiful lawn from perfect to "what the heck happened" overnight. Since it is a soil borne disease, it is hard to prevent. No good prevention as preventative treatments are expensive and curative treatments of a fungicide help but the damage is done. Solution: At APL Lawn Spraying we keep the potassium levels high and nitrogen levels low to reduce occurrence.
