Permaculture Projects: Swales
A Swale is a method used to harvest rain water. They are long shallow trenches that run along the contour of the land, are perfectly level. Swales do not direct water flow, but collect water. The soil removed from the swale is piled on the downhill side to make a slightly raised berm. When rain falls, water collects in the swale. Water will slowly seep into soil collect in underground pockets that will supply the roots of plants through weeks even months without rain.
Great reuse of materials to make a stylish and functional stairwell

Tips for a Big Landscape in a Small Space
For small spaces - Think Vertically "If you can't push the garden walls outward, you can still advance upward. Vertical accents and changes in level attract the eye away from the boundaries of the garden, and make it feel more spacious. In this example, the strong vertical giant bird of paradise plants help frame and separate a raised lounge area in one corner of the garden."
I'm gonna have to learn how to make these if i get that south hill home! LOL
