In an extended critique of the war on obesity, (Karsardo & McHugh, 2012) it was argued that the war is sponsored by corporations that have an economic interest in the war: the diet pharmaceutical industry, including companies like Jenny Craig, Slim Fast and Weight Watchers. Many societies, including the United States, place paramount value on physical appearance as a contributing factor of female worth. It even forced some celebrities to seek surgical interventions.
Our women see particular celebrities, including Oprah Winfrey, Queen Latifah, Mo’Nique and their struggle with weight and food. One can’t help but feel the pain and the highs and lows that they go through. Mo'Nique did the Movie "Phatz Girls" which inspired me to be content in my size and shape!
Our young ladies see celebrities like Beyoncé, Trina, Rihanna, K Michelle, Ciara, and Porsha and, unfortunately, compare themselves to these celebrities. They were evaluating themselves in comparison to virtually almost unattainable female physique which can lead to lower self-esteem, body image problems and increased depressive symptomology (Haboush, Warren, & Benuto, 2012).
Media from back in the day to present. Do you remember when the t.v. use to sound off at a certain time of the night? Do you remember typing a paper on a typewriter? How about talking on the phone standing up next to the wall? Do you remember riding your bike for hours outside? How about your first record player and having to put a quarter on it with tape? Our young People Don't know anything about those days! Now they have smart televisions, computers, cellphones, social media, and Wikipedia.
