The 422 class, Clyde's box-like dual cab locos were an Australian first. On Main South and Illawarra lines for most of their life, they hauled goods and Canberra Express, Intercapital Daylight, South Coast Daylight Express, Southern Aurora, Spirit of Progress and other expresses. They operated through to Melbourne 1982-1990. In 1980 42220 was rebuilt with new alternator, electrical system and Super Series wheel slip technology as a test for the 81 class. 13 are in service, 2 stored.
