Hair ornament, Qing Dynasty (19th century), China, composed of gilded silver, silk thread, kingfisher feathers, pearls, glass beads, rubies. Likely once worn by the empress dowager, the effective ruler of China during the later years of the Qing Dynasty.

Empress's ceremonial "Caoguan" (hat). The headdress was decorated with a 3-layer top, each layer having one gold phoenix and one big pearl. On each phoenix, there were 3 big pearls and 17 small ones. In the Qing Dynasty, the custom of wearing a phoenix coronet for the female was reserved. Gold, pearls, sable, silk floss, kingfisher feathers, precious stones. 37 x 27 cm.
