The main religion was polytheism, meaning they believed in several Gods. The people of Sparta followed the beliefs of the Olympians. In ancient Greek religion, the Twelve Olympians were the principal deities of the Greek pantheon residing on the top of Mount Olympus: Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Demeter, Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Ares, Aphrodite, Hephaestus, Hermes, Hestia, and Dionysus.

At one point, Poseidon tried to compete with Athena for the title of the primary god of the city of Athens. Both gods decided to appease the people by giving them a gift. Poseidon gave them a spring of water, while Athena gave them an olive tree. The people chose Athena since the olive tree seemed like a better gift.
