Horsemen rode out and began setting fire to several military amakhanda (military barracks), when the Zulu army (consisting of between 15 000 and 20 000 warriors) launched its attack on the British Square at the Battle of Ulundi. After desperate fighting, during which time the Zulus advanced to within 30 metres of the square, they were driven off with heavy losses. This was the final Battle of the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879.
