As I may have mentioned in the past, I grew up in the 50s-60s watching Westerns on TV. Also, I wanted to do something relatively simple for my next project, so I selected this Andrea oldie released in 1998.

A young Steve McQueen plays Josh Randall, a western bounty hunter in the 1870s, in the TV show "Wanted: Dead or Alive" which ran from 1958 to 1961.

The figure is straight from the box and I used the Andrea Base with a bit of added Magic Sculpt, pebbles and a twig from my back yard for the groundwork.

All painting was done in acrylics.

Thanks for looking,
Ken

A fun subject, very nicely done and beautifully presented. You did a great job integrating that twig into the groundwork.

Well painted but the deep wrinkles were only very present when he broadly smiled or when he inclined is head deep in his shoulders, when looking impassive almost no wrinkles, looking far under the sun :

Thanks Michel. I understand your comment but that is not quite my style. If I were painting a larger scale bust, I would be doing exactly what you suggest.

However, my approach is based on scale. The smaller the figure the more the contrast between shadows and highlights. So 28mm-36mm have major contrast, 54mm have strong contrast and 75mm on up get increasingly less contrast.

The problem with photos that are larger than life is my 54mm face appears to be the size of a much larger figure. If I went with less contrast and displayed him live at a show, his face would look very washed out in 54mm scale.

I realize this is matter of taste and everyone is, of course, entitled to different techniques, but this is my preferred approach. I am a great admirer of painters like Doug Cohen and he follows, I believe, a similar approach.

One final comment. I am little disappointed with the photos I posted, in that, although he is squinting, I guarantee he really does have painted eyes :), and they do not show up well at all. But I'm on to my next project so what is, is. o_O

Cheers,
Ken

I like it. I still watch that show. Because I'm old and love westerns. Cool painting.

Well done! The show is one of my all-time favorite westerns, too. Steve McQueen, the King of Cool!
Rick

Excellent work as always, Ken!

Many thanks Steve, Nap, Rick and Scott. I really enjoyed this simpler project. Brings back a lot of memories of sitting down with my family and watching TV. :)

Ken, Excellent job on Josh Randall. Well recall the series which you can still catch on TVland. Like what you did with the figure, groundwork, painting, etch.(y) All in all, nicely done. Thanks for sharing your work!
