The movie, based on DC Comics characters, stars Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker. Joker provides characters with a story of possible origin. Arthur Fleck, a failed stand-up comedian, set in 1981, falls into insanity and nihilism, triggering a violent counter-cultural revolution against the wealthy people of the declining Gotham City. Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Bill Camp, Shea Whigham, and Marc Maron appear in supporting roles. Joker was produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Films, Joint Effort and distributed by Warner Bros. in association with Bron Creative and Village Roadshow Pictures.
Phillips conceived the Joker in 2016 and wrote it in Silver throughout 2017. The two were inspired by character studies in the 1970s and films by Martin Scorsese, who first joined the project as a producer, (particularly Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy). The graphic novel “Batman: The Killing Joke” (1988) was the basis for this premise, but Phillips and Silver otherwise did not look for a particular comic for inspiration. Phoenix attached in February 2018 and was cast in July, but most of the cast was signed on by August. Principal photography took place in New York, Jersey City and Newark from September to December 2018. Joker is the first live-action theatre Batman movie to receive an R rating from the American Film Association. due to its violent and disturbing content.
The Joker premiered at the 76th Venice International Film Festival on August 31, 2019, won the Golden Lion, and was released in the United States on October 4, 2019. The value of Phoenix’s performance, musical score, cinematography, and production was praised, and dark tones, portrayal of mental illness, and coping with violence divided the response. Joker has also generated concerns that it will cause real-world violence. The cinema, which was mass-produced in Aurora, Colorado in 2012 during the screening of The Dark Knight Rises, refused to show. Nevertheless, the film was a huge success in the box office and set a record for its October release. Joker has earned more than $1 billion in revenue, the first movie to be rated R, the seventh-highest movie in 2019, and the 32nd highest movie in history.
Joker has received many acclaims. At the 77th Golden Globe Award, Hildul Gznadottir and the Best Actor – Drama for Phoenix won the Best Original Score. It also won 11 major nominations in two ceremonies. The 73rd British Academy Awards, Best Film Award, Best Director Award, Best Actor Award and more. The 92nd Academy Awards includes the Best Picture Award, Phoenix Best Actor, and Best Director.
