A pillow is a support of the body at rest for comfort, therapy or decoration. Pillows are used by many species, including humans. Some types of pillows include pillows and throw pillows and decorative pillows. The pillows that help sleep are formed of a bedding that supports the head and neck. Other types of pillows are designed to support the body when you are lying or sitting. Recently, pillows have appeared that look at the shape of the human body for a more comfortable sleep. Decorative pillows used on beds, couches or chairs are also called cushions.
In modern Western culture, pillows consist of plain or patterned fabric envelope (known as pillowcase), which contain soft fabric, usually synthetic and usually standardized in size and shape. Historically, pillows have been made from various natural materials, and many cultures continue to use pillows made from natural materials.
The word “pillow” comes from Middle English pilwe, from Old English pyle and from Latin pulvinus. The first known use of this word was 12 centuries ago.
Pillows consist of a filler enclosed in a cloth or wrapper. The shells are made of cloth, such as silk, known as a pillowcase or a sliding pillow. Standard rectangular pillowcases, as a rule, do not have a zipper, but instead always have one open side. Often, zippered pillow protector are placed around the standard pillows with the case in turn covering the protector.
Choosing a pillow for a bed depends on the position of the sleeper: one manufacturer recommends a thinner and softer pillow for sleeping face down, a support for the middle part of the back and a thicker and firmer pillow for sleeping on the side.
