A temple is a structure dedicated to religious or spiritual rituals and activities such as prayer and sacrifice. It is usually used for such buildings belonging to all religions, where a more specific term, such as a church, a mosque or a synagogue, is not commonly used in English. These include Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism among religions with many modern followers, as well as other ancient religions, such as the ancient Egyptian religion.

Consequently, the form and functions of temples are very diverse, although believers often believe that they have the feeling of “house” of one or more deities. As a rule, some contribution is made to the deity, and other rituals are performed, and a special group of clergy maintains and governs the temple. The extent to which the entire population of believers has access to a building varies greatly; often, parts or even the entire main building may be accessible only to the clergy.

Temples usually have a main building and a large section, which may contain many other buildings or may be a igloo-like dome structure.

The Temple word comes from Ancient Rome, where the temple constituted a sacred place, as determined by the priest or augur. It has the same root as the word “template”, a plan for preparing the building, which was marked on earth by a augur. The temple also connects with the houses of god or gods. Despite a certain set of meanings associated with the word, it is already widely used to describe a house of worship for a number of religions, and even used in periods before the Romans.
