Halsey Is Basically a Sexy Disco Cowboy in “You Should Be Sad” Music Video
Halsey's new album Manic is only one week away, and this morning, she's treated us to yet another peak at exactly what we can expect when it drops on Jan. 17. Channelling '90s icons like Shania Twain and Christina Aguilera, plus '20s legend Lady Gaga, Halsey's "You Should Be Sad" video is a nostalgic ride, with a heavy dose of sex.
In the first scenes of the video for Halsey's new electro-country bop, she shows up to the club in a Trans Am, before paying homage to Aguilera's wet and wild "Dirrty" video, then hopping up onto a hay bale tower dressed in Twain's head-to-toe leopard outfit from "That Don't Impress Me Much." It's a throwback look that every '90s kid will appreciate. But the references don't stop there. Halsey also channels Gaga while sitting naked on a horse's back, with long, flowing platinum blond hair, with all of her tattoos on full display.
The song itself is a scathing break-up anthem that we'll be belting out while cruising around in our cars — windows wound all the way down, of course — for weeks. Halsey's words are a harsh but (by the sounds of it) fair thrashing, singing, "No, you're not half the man you think that you are / And you can't fill the hole inside of you with money, drugs, and cars / I'm so glad I never ever had a baby with you / 'Cause you can't love nothing unless there's something in it for you." The first line of the chorus, "Oh, I feel so sorry, I feel so sad," will trigger anyone who's ever heard the words, "I'm not angry . . . I'm disappointed." Add the steamy dance numbers and studded leather triangle bra, and, yeah, we're pretty glad we're not the guy this song was written about.
